NIMBLE MINDS WORKSHOPS

Our workshops combine rigorous teaching and learning of reasoning with thinking games and collaborative group activities. They are great fun and help to boost confidence.

OVERVIEW

The Nimble Minds Workshop sessions are very carefully planned to provide a balance between formal teaching, learning and practise of reasoning with dynamic group activities and thinking games. Each session targets a specific verbal or non-verbal question type, reinforced by a concise practise exercise or test to check and cement understanding. There is a strong emphasis on vocabulary, analytical reading of instructions and systematic application of logic.  Listening activities and tests are  also included. The programme is carefully planned to improve reasoning ability and exam performance at 7+, 8+ 11+ and the ISEB Pre-test and to give children opportunities to work and solve problems effectively together. The Nimble Minds thinking games are specially selected and designed to improve concentration, memory (auditory and visual), processing speed, following spoken instructions, decoding written instructions, and the ability to think quickly and clearly under time pressure.
Once the reasoning lesson is complete, the children work in pairs, small groups or the larger group as a whole. Children enjoy the group activities tremendously and grow in confidence in their ability to work together with others.
Group size is limited to 10 pupils per adult to ensure that each gets the best possible learning experience.

Our workshops include interview practice.

RATIONALE

Children need to be adaptable in their thinking, more so now than ever before. Despite its huge importance in the in the most important exams before the age of 13 in the UK, reasoning is not given priority in the state nor private school curriculum. While some people are naturally better at reasoning than others and most have a preference between verbal and non-verbal reasoning, we know that reasoning can be taught and improved. Our programme is carefully devised to improve exam performance in reasoning and to boost crucial thinking skills which are essential for all learning.  The Nimble Minds thinking games boost adaptable thinking, communication, cooperation and (most important of all) confidence. Group activities are increasingly used in academic selection at 7+. 8+ and 11+ so it makes sense to give children opportunities to practise with working and solving problems together. Most importantly, we strive to make learning meaningful and enjoyable.
